Sussex 7, Brockton 5

The Sussex Skyhawks scored six big runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-1 lead and held off a Brockton rally to beat the Rox 7-5. Skyhawks DH Caleb Stewart went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI while 2B Chase Fontaine had a two-hit game with two runs scored and two driven in. Sussex starter Jusef Frias won his first game of the season as he allowed two earned runs on seven hits while fanning eight batters in six innings of work. DH Scott Wearne went 2-for-4 with three RBI for Brockton in defeat.

New Jersey 4, Pittsfield 2 (Game 1 – 7 innings)

Jackals CF Kevin Clark had a huge game at the plate to lead New Jersey past Pittsfield in game one of a doubleheader. Clark was 4-for-5 with a pair of solo home runs, two doubles and three runs scored to lead all hitters. Jackals starting pitcher A.J. Wideman took care of the rest, allowing one run on six hits while striking out five in 5.2 innings to record his first win of the season. New Jersey closer Romas Hicks allowed a run before striking out the side in the seventh inning to notch his second save.

Pittsfield 2, New Jersey 1 (Game 2 – 7 innings)

Pittsfield C Chris Torres singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to help the Colonials salvage a split of the doubleheader. Pittsfield RF Angel Molina drove in the teams only other run and finished the contest 2-for-3 with a double. Colonials reliever Chris Rollins fanned three in two shutout innings to earn his first win of the season. Pittsfield starter Chance Corgan pitched well, allowing one run on five hits in five innings of work, but did not factor in the decision.

Quebec 4, Worcester 3

A sacrifice fly off the bat of Quebec CF Goefrey Tomlinson in the sixth inning was the difference in the Capitales 4-3 win over Worcester. Quebec reliever Sean Gregory picked up the win after allowing an unearned run in two innings of work, while fellow reliever Derek McDaid nabbed the save thanks to a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Quebec 3B Patrick Deschenes led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a RBI. Capitales C Patrick D’Aoust doubled and scored a run and was also 2-for-4.

Worcester 6, Brockton 5

In a back-and-forth contest, Worcester bested Brockton 6-5 when RF Eric Asadoorian hit a game-winning solo home run in the top of the ninth. Worcester took an early 1-0 lead in the third before Brockton answered with a two-run fourth on the strength of a two-run homer by LF Mike Conroy. Tornadoes SS Omar Pena then countered with a grand slam in the top of the seventh to give Worcester a 5-2 lead. Brockton tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the seventh before Asadoorian connected off of Rox reliever Colin Lynch, who took the loss.

Quebec 10, Pittsfield 4

Quebec jumped out to a 4-0 lead and pounded Colonials starter Matthew Paradoski on their way to a 10-4 victory. LF Alex Nunez and 3B Patrick Deschenes were the offensive stars for the Capitales, each tallying a home run in the win. The Quebec bullpen allowed just one run in 5.1 innings of work, and reliever Adam Arnold earned the win. The Colonials got a solo home run from leadoff man Jose Duarte in the loss.

Sussex 5, New Jersey 4

Sussex capped a comeback win with a run in the last of the ninth to best New Jersey 5-4. Down 4-1 in the sixth inning, the Skyhawks scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh, before winning the game with a single tally in the final frame. Sussex CF Carl Loadenthal tallied three hits and a home run to lead the offense. Late relievers Donald Jordat and Jared Locke shut down the Jackals offense in the final three frames, and Locke left with the win. New Jersey DH Shawn Riggins hit his second home run of the season.

Brockton 13, Worcester 3

The Rox offense powered the team to its first win of the season with a 13-3 home drubbing of Worcester. Without a home run, Brockton pounded out 15 hits and 13 runs on the strength of RF Keith Brachold, who had four hits and three RBI, and 3B Phillip Cuadrado, who amassed three hits and four RBI. The Rox benefited from a four-run second inning and a five-run sixth inning in support of starter Mike Smith, who gave up two runs in 5.1 innings of work. The Tornadoes were plagued by four errors, which led to seven unearned Brockton runs.

Quebec 9, Pittsfield 6

The Capitales scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn their second late-inning comeback of the young season and clip Pittsfield 9-6. Two Colonial errors and a timely two-run single by Quebec SS Ivan Naccarata capped the big inning, and reliever Matthew Rusch worked the final two innings to pick up the win. Naccarata led the offensive charge for the Capitales with two hits and four RBI, and all but one Quebec starter managed at least one hit in the game. Pittsfield looked to be in good shape, holding a 6-5 lead late, thanks to a five-run fifth inning powered by a three-run home run by 1B Jerod Edmondson, his second of the season.

Sussex 9, New Jersey 5

The Sussex offense smacked 14 hits on their way to a 9-5 home win against New Jersey. 1B Kris Sanchez paced the Skyhawks offense with a 4-for-5 night and recorded two RBI. Four Skyhawks tallied at least two hits, and the offensive effort was enough to support starter Mike McGuire, who gave up two earned runs in five innings to earn the win. New Jersey DH Sean Riggins continued his hot hitting with a 3-for-4 night that included a three-run home run in the first inning.

Little Falls, NJ – Jackals starter Isaac Pavlik was brilliant in his ninth start of the season, guiding New Jersey to a 4-1 victory over the American Defenders of New Hampshire at Yogi Berra Stadium on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Jackals cut their magic number to one and can clinch the Can-Am League first-half title with either a Quebec win over Brockton in a 5:05 p.m. game tonight, or a win over New Hampshire tomorrow night.

Pavlik (5-1) allowed just one run on four hits in eight innings of work, striking out seven batters and walking just one. The left-hander now has 44 strikeouts this season, the highest total in the Can-Am League. Closer Rusty Tucker came on in the ninth inning to shut the door on New Hampshire and notch his twelfth save of the season.

The Defenders plated their only run of the contest in the bottom of the second inning. After a leadoff triple by designated hitter Jabe Bergeron New Hampshire left fielder Jerod Edmondson laced a single that scored Bergeron from third to make it a 1-0 game.

New Jersey would be kept in check by New Hampshire starter Lucas Ledbetter through the first five innings, stranding eight runners over that stretch. Ledbetter, making just his second start of the season, finally broke in the sixth inning when the Jackals tied the game. After catcher Matt Lauderdale led off with a walk, recent acquisition Justin Humphries ripped a double that placed runners at second and third with no outs. New Hampshire then went to the bullpen, bringing in right-hander Gabe Cuevas to face Mike Scanzano. The Jackals’ third baseman walked to load the bases for centerfielder Billy Kovatch, who grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Lauderdale from third and forced Scanzano out at second.

The Jackals would put their final three runs up on the board in the bottom of the seventh. With new relief pitcher Luis Ramos on the mound, leftfielder Ryan Rogowski drew a walk to start the frame for New Jersey. A sacrifice bunt by shortstop Mike DeJesus moved Rogowski to second before cleanup hitter Myron Leslie drew a walk of his own. Right fielder Quentin Davis then flew out to right field for the second out of the inning. Davis entered the game in the fifth inning to replace Juan Tejeda, who was ejected for arguing a called strike. The next batter, catcher Matt Lauderdale, ripped a single to load the bases and knock Ramos out of the contest. New Hampshire turned to reliever Adam Piechowski to silence the Jackals rally, but New Jersey wouldn’t be stopped. Humphries deposited a two-run single and moments later Scanzano laced a run-scoring single of his own to make it 4-1 Jackals.

In the ninth, Tucker would face just four batters, allowing a one out single to center fielder Edward Ovalle, before retiring the final two batters of the contest. Ramos (4-3) took the loss for New Hampshire as the go-ahead runs in the seventh inning were credited to him.

New Jersey concludes its four-game series with the Defenders tomorrow night as Stuart Pomeranz takes the mound for the Jackals against New Hampshire right-hander Nick Asselin. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. but tune in to the live broadcast starting at 6:50 p.m. at www.jackals.com. Cody Chrusciel and Joey Whelan will be on the call for the contest.

The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2009 season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.
Twice Brockton erased a deficit, and did so without scoring an earned run in the entire game. Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning, the Rox scored three unearned runs to take a 3-2 lead. Capitales’ CF Goefrey Tomlinson dropped a fly ball off the bat of Brockton’s DH Palmer Karr to start the inning. Karr took second base on the error. LF Keith Brachold singled to plate Karr after a ground out. Then 2B Melvin Falu doubled into the right field corner to push Brachold to third base. Brachold scored on a ground out and Falu scored on a subsequent RBI double by C Chris Grossman.

Meanwhile, RHP Buster Lussier was called on in emergency relief after Rox starter LHP Bryan Morse left in the first inning with tendonitis in his forearm. Lussier retired the first four batters he faced, getting the last out in the first inning and working a 1-2-3 second inning. However, Quebec re-captured the lead with two runs in the third against Lussier who surrendered three total in his 4.1 innings of work. The third run Lussier allowed gave Quebec a 5-3 lead in the fifth inning. 3B Patrick Deschenes doubled to bring home 1B Pierre-Luc Laforest.

Quebec committed its second of three errors to open the sixth inning when SS Ivan Naccarata threw wildly to first on a ground ball by RF Jud Thigpen. The Rox capitalized by scoring four runs in the inning on three hits and another Capitales’ error. The final run of the inning scored on a wild play. With 3B Phillip Cuadrado at third and Grossman at first, SS Dominic Ramos singled to left field. Grossman went to third and Ramos found himself hung up in a run down between first and second. Quebec left field Tony Lewis threw to the cutoff man, Naccarata who turned and threw to second base, catching Ramos between first and second base. In the ensuing rundown, Grossman bolted for home and the attempt to throw him out skipped beyond Capitales’ catcher Patrick D’Aoust. Grossman scored and Ramos reached second base safely.

The Rox bullpen was terrific as RHP Matt Zachary earned the win, following Lussier’s 4.1 innings with two scoreless frames of his own. LHP Brad Hertzler extended his scoreless innings streak to 12 with a scoreless eighth and RHP Jerry Dunn picked up his seventh save of the year getting the final three outs.

The two teams complete the series on Monday at 6:05 PM at Campanelli Stadium. Quebec will send RHP Michel Simard (4-4, 3.36 ERA) out to match up against Rox LHP Craig Anderson (4-2, 2.58 ERA).

BROCKTON, MA – (June 26, 2009) – The Brockton Rox rallied from deficits of 6-1 and 7-2 in two different games on Thursday night, only to leave the game-tying run at second base in the final inning of each game. Brockton lost both halves of a double header with New Hampshire on Thursday, falling 6-5 in game one and 7-6 in game two.

The Rox trailed 6-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning (the final scheduled inning) of the first game. DH Palmer Karr hit a two-run home run, his first of two on the day to pull the score to 6-3. Two batters later, 3B Phillip Cuadrado came off the bench and delivered a two-run, pinch-hit home run to pull the Rox within one run. Two batters later, CF Chris Valencia singled and stole second base, and after a walk to 2B Melvin Falu, 1B Clyde Williams lined out to left field to end the game.

In the nightcap, New Hampshire broke out to an early lead again; scoring seven runs in the first three innings. Karr’s second home run of the day, a two-run homer in the first inning kept the Rox within striking distance. New Hampshire carried a 7-3 advantage into the sixth inning and the Rox started to chip away. Brockton scored twice in the inning on an RBI single by 1B Clyde Williams and a pinch-hit RBI single by C Chris Grossman.

New Hampshire held a two-run cushion and summoned RHP Juan Padilla for his second appearance of the day. Padilla had recorded the final outs of the first game to earn a save, and entered for the final inning of the second game. Valencia started the inning with a single, and after a line out, moved to second base on a walk by Karr. RF Jud Thigpen then doubled to left field, scoring Valencia, but Karr was thrown out after slipping around third base. Padilla then struck out LF Keith Brachold to end the game and earn his second save of the day.

Brockton and New Hampshire return to the field on Friday night at 7:05 PM. LHP Bryan Morse ( 0-0, 2.08 ERA) will face Defenders’ RHP Luis Valdez (0-1, 3.60 ERA).

BROCKTON, MA – (June 12, 2009) – New Jersey Jackals’ pitcher Ted Serro stymied the Brockton Rox for the second consecutive start and Jackals’ first baseman Myron Leslie drove in four runs as New Jersey took the first game of a weekend series 7-5 at Campanelli Stadium on Friday night.

The Rox faced Serro for the second time in a week and struggled to figure out the right-hander who shut them out last Thursday in New Jersey over seven innings. This time however, Brockton was able to score a couple of runs despite just a handful of hits.

After falling behind 4-0 in the third inning, the Rox scored for the first time in ten innings against Serro, dating back to his last start. Brockton opened up the bottom of the fourth inning with a walk by 3B Phillip Cuadrado followed by a single from 1B Keith Brachold. The next two batters grounded out, but each drove in a run as Brockton cut the deficit to 4-2.

Rox starter LHP Craig Anderson failed in his bid for his third straight win with just one rough inning. New Jersey scored four times in the third against the Australian southpaw, beginning with the first of two home runs on the night by LF Ryan Rogowski. RF Quinn Stewart and 1B Myron Leslie each doubled in the inning as the trio accounted for three of the team’s eight extra-base hits on the night.

Rogowski and Brachold traded solo home runs in the sixth inning to push the score to 5-3 in favor of New Jersey, and when Leslie hit a two-run home run in the seventh, Brockton was staring at a four-run deficit for the second time in the game.

However the Rox opened up the bottom of the seventh with the first two batters reaching and chased Serro from the game. SS Freddy Flores drove in a run with a groundout, and CF Chris Valencia followed with an RBI double to cut the score to 7-5.

The New Jersey bullpen held up over the final six outs however as RHP Seth Overbey worked a perfect eighth inning and LHP Rusty Tucker a perfect ninth to secure the win. The save for Tucker was his third in the last 30 hours after saving two games in a double header on Thursday against Quebec.

The Rox and Jackals take the field again on Saturday with a 6:05 PM first pitch. RHP Wayne Lundgren (1-1, 4.32 ERA) takes the hill for Brockton against New Jersey RHP Stuart Pomeranz (1-1, 5.91 ERA).
