The Brockton Rox got a great outing from starting pitcher Wayne Lundgren and plenty of offensive support to roll to an easy win against New Hampshire on the road. With the win, Brockton extended its winning streak to 10 games. Lundgren allowed six hits and struck out six in a complete game shutout to earn the win and improve to 5-4 on the season. The Rox offense posted five runs in the first inning and never looked back. Brockton 1B Clyde Williams, DH Palmer Karr and 2B Melvin Falu all hit home runs and combined to drive in seven of the Rox 10 runs. Brockton SS Dom Ramos led all hitters, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

Worcester 1B Chris Colabello was a one-man wrecking crew as he went 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI to lead the Tornadoes to a 6-1 victory. That turned out to be more than enough support for Worcester starting pitcher Ryan Lobban who allowed two hits in seven shutout innings to earn the win and improve to 5-3 in the process. Tornadoes reliever Santiago Ramirez came on to record the game’s final out and in doing so earned his third save.

Quebec starting pitcher Eric Gagne picked up his second win of the season. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits while striking out five in seven innings of work.

BROCKTON, MA – (July 12, 2009) – The Brockton Rox tied a franchise record with the team’s eighth consecutive win on Sunday night at Campanelli Stadium with a 7-6 win over the Quebec Capitales. RHP Jerry Dunn struck out DH Eddie Lantigua to end the game with the tying run at third base.

Twice Brockton erased a deficit, and did so without scoring an earned run in the entire game. Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning, the Rox scored three unearned runs to take a 3-2 lead. Capitales’ CF Goefrey Tomlinson dropped a fly ball off the bat of Brockton’s DH Palmer Karr to start the inning. Karr took second base on the error. LF Keith Brachold singled to plate Karr after a ground out. Then 2B Melvin Falu doubled into the right field corner to push Brachold to third base. Brachold scored on a ground out and Falu scored on a subsequent RBI double by C Chris Grossman.

Meanwhile, RHP Buster Lussier was called on in emergency relief after Rox starter LHP Bryan Morse left in the first inning with tendonitis in his forearm. Lussier retired the first four batters he faced, getting the last out in the first inning and working a 1-2-3 second inning. However, Quebec re-captured the lead with two runs in the third against Lussier who surrendered three total in his 4.1 innings of work. The third run Lussier allowed gave Quebec a 5-3 lead in the fifth inning. 3B Patrick Deschenes doubled to bring home 1B Pierre-Luc Laforest.

Quebec committed its second of three errors to open the sixth inning when SS Ivan Naccarata threw wildly to first on a ground ball by RF Jud Thigpen. The Rox capitalized by scoring four runs in the inning on three hits and another Capitales’ error. The final run of the inning scored on a wild play. With 3B Phillip Cuadrado at third and Grossman at first, SS Dominic Ramos singled to left field. Grossman went to third and Ramos found himself hung up in a run down between first and second. Quebec left field Tony Lewis threw to the cutoff man, Naccarata who turned and threw to second base, catching Ramos between first and second base. In the ensuing rundown, Grossman bolted for home and the attempt to throw him out skipped beyond Capitales’ catcher Patrick D’Aoust. Grossman scored and Ramos reached second base safely.

The Rox bullpen was terrific as RHP Matt Zachary earned the win, following Lussier’s 4.1 innings with two scoreless frames of his own. LHP Brad Hertzler extended his scoreless innings streak to 12 with a scoreless eighth and RHP Jerry Dunn picked up his seventh save of the year getting the final three outs.

The two teams complete the series on Monday at 6:05 PM at Campanelli Stadium. Quebec will send RHP Michel Simard (4-4, 3.36 ERA) out to match up against Rox LHP Craig Anderson (4-2, 2.58 ERA).

QUEBEC CITY, CA – (July 3, 2009) – The Brockton Rox dropped a 5-3 loss to the Quebec Capitales on Friday night at Le Stade Municipal in Quebec City to open a weekend series. Brockton took a 3-2 lead in the seventh inning after erasing a 2-0 deficit, only to watch it slip away in the bottom of the inning in a three-run rally by the Capitales.

After a one-hour and forty-five minute delay of the first pitch due to inclement weather, the Rox jumped out with three straight singles to start the game. However, SS Dominic Ramos was thrown out at the plate in the inning and Brockton was unable to push across a run.

Meanwhile, Quebec scored a run in the first and second innings against Rox starter LHP Craig Anderson. Anderson settled in over the middle innings, and allowed just one base runner, a two-out single in the fourth, over the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.

Anderson’s strong middle innings gave the Rox the opportunity to climb back in the contest. Brockton evened the score at two runs apiece with a pair of runs in the third inning. 1B Clyde Williams and DH Palmer Karr picked up an RBI in the inning.

With the game still tied in the top of the seventh inning, C Chris Grossman delivered a leadoff double for the Rox. Ramos moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt, and CF Chris Valecia gave the Rox the lead with a sacrifice fly.

The advantage was short-lived however as Quebec answered with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh. Brockton also committed a costly error, and LHP Brad Hertzler was charged with a balk which allowed a run to score in the seventh inning; all leading to two unearned runs.

The Rox and Capitales revive the series on Saturday night when Brockton RHP Wayne Lundgren (3-3, 3.47 ERA) will face former Cy Young Award winner RHP Eric Gagne (0-1, 10.80 ERA) of the Capitales. Saturday’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.

AUGUSTA, N.J. – The Sussex Skyhawks fell behind early on seven Quebec Capitales runs in the first inning, but rallied as they won 17-16 Thursday night at Skylands Park. Kyle Kmiecik’s game winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth won it for the Skyhawks.

Alex Smith made his first start of the season for the Skyhawks, but ran into immediate difficulties as the Capitales jumped on him for four hits and seven earned runs as he was pulled in the first and replaced by James Douglas who completed the inning, but gave up a hit which scored two of Smith’s runners.

However, the Skyhawks battled back in the bottom of the first on a three-run home run by designated hitter Jorge Moreno. Then in the third inning, the Skyhawks picked up eight runs on nine hits as they sent up twelve batters. The Capitales evened it up in the top of the fourth with three runs, but the Skyhawks regained the lead in bottom of the fourth as the put five up on the board including a three RBI double by Maikel Jova.

In the top of the ninth, the Capitales’ Patrick D’Aoust’s base hit scored two off Skyhawks reliever Sandy Nin to tie the score at 16. However, in the bottom of the ninth the first two Skyhawks, Jeremy Hunt singles and Ray Cerrano reached base on a fielder’s choice. Kmiecik lined up to bunt, but brought the bat back and slapped a single to right-centerfield scoring Hunt.

Jorge Morena was 2 for 4 with a home run and Maikel Jova was 3 for 6 with four RBI’s for the Skyhawks. Greg Stevens was 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBI’s for the Capitales.

The Skyhawks return to action tomorrow night for game two of the four game series against Les Capitales with a special start time at 6:35 with fireworks following the game.
