Nashua, NH – The American Defenders of New Hampshire (17-18) prevailed in a back-and-forth contest with the Sussex Skyhawks (15-20), defeating them 7-5 on a beautiful, sun-splashed Fourth of July matinee game at Historic Holman Stadium.

The Defenders were rewarded for their patience in the third inning, as both Boomer Berry and Jabe Bergeron drew bases loaded walks to score a run each. Bergeron later broke a 5-5 tie in the seventh inning with a solo blast, his first homerun of the season. Greg Lemon’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth gave the Defenders a two-run lead.

New Hampshire hurler Miguel Flores (3-0) did not factor in the decision, tossing five innings, allowing three runs, on eight hits, with two walks and two strikeouts. Flores was relieved by Adam Piechowski, who blew away the Skyhawks, earning the win after striking out the side in the top of the eighth inning. Piechowski has yet to allow a run in eleven innings of work with the Defenders. NH Closer Juan Padilla shut the door on Sussex, securing his league-leading eleventh save without allowing a hit.

The Skyhawks received three-hit games from both leftfielder Ryan Crespi and catcher Ray Serrano. Serrano belted his first homerun of the season to lead off the second inning, while first baseman John Urick added a homer in the seventh, finishing 2-for-5 on the night.

Skyhawks starter Jamie Douglas lasted just four innings, surrendering four runs (two earned), on three hits, with four walks and one strikeout. Reliever Sandy Nin suffered the loss for Sussex.

The Defenders will face the Sussex Skyhawks on Sunday in their final game of this home stand before a nine-day road trip through Quebec and New Jersey. Sunday’s match will begin at 5:05pm at Historic Holman Stadium, as the first 1,000 fans will receive logo baseballs. Isaac Burkett (3-3) is slated to take the hill for New Hampshire while Carter Clemens (1-2) will get the nod for Sussex.

Nashua, NH – The American Defenders of New Hampshire (16-18) scored in five different innings to take down the Sussex Skyhawks (15-19), 11-5, in front of 1,012 fans at Historic Holman Stadium on Friday night.

Down 4-1 heading into the bottom of the third, the Defenders responded with four runs, highlighted by a two-run single from Argenis Tavarez. Edward Ovalle’s fourth inning homer gave NH a 6-4 lead they would never relinquish, while Angel Molina’s three-run shot in the sixth provided some extra insurance. Third baseman Chris Kelly belted his league-leading ninth homerun well over the left-center field wall in the eighth inning to cap off his 4-for-5 night.

Sussex had jumped out to an early lead after a three-run third inning, including a two-run double by first baseman John Urick. The Skyhawks could manage just one more run in the seventh inning, a solo blast from centerfielder Luis Soto. Third baseman Jeremy Hunt picked up two hits in four at bats for Sussex.

New Hampshire starter Nick Asselin (3-3) earned the win to even his record, working six innings, allowing four runs (three earned), on seven hits, with one walk, and one strikeout. NH also received scoreless frames from relievers Adam Piechowski and Juan Padilla.

The Skyhawks sent lefty Roger Lincoln (2-2) to the mound, who suffered the loss, allowing six runs, on seven hits, with three walks, and seven strikeouts. Lincoln was relieved by Alex Smith, who was touched up for five runs over four innings.

The Defenders will take on the Sussex Skyhawks on the Fourth of July, starting at 2:05pm on Saturday at Historic Holman Stadium. The game will be followed by a concert featuring AFTERBURNER, with beer tents available and fireworks starting at dusk. Sunday’s contest will begin at 5:05pm as the first 1,000 fans will receive logo baseballs.

Nashua, NH – The American Defenders of New Hampshire (2-2) plated nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to defeat the New Jersey Jackals (2-2) 15-5 on Sunday evening at Historic Holman Stadium in the final game of the season-opening four-game series.

The Defenders jumped on Jackals’ starter Mike Vicaro immediately out of the gate, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning on a pair of RBI singles by right fielder Angel Molina and first baseman Clyde Williams, and a three-run home run by left fielder Jerod Edmondson. An RBI double by center fielder Edward Ovalle in the bottom of the second extended the New Hampshire lead to 6-0.

The Jackals broke through against New Hampshire righty Nick Asselin in the top of the fourth inning. With one out and Myron Leslie aboard after a leadoff double, right fielder Quinn Stewart ripped a double down the left field line to make it a 6-1 game. Two batter later, center fielder Zack Smithlin laced a run-scoring single up the middle to pull the Jackals within four.

But in the bottom of the fourth, the Defenders the Jackals starter from the game, scoring nine runs on six hits while sending 13 batters to the plate against Vicaro and reliever Giuseppe Granitto. A two-run double by second baseman Boomer Berry was followed by run-scoring doubles by Ovalle and third baseman Chris Kelly to extend the Defenders’ lead to 10-2. An infield single by designated hitter Argenis Tavarez, which made it 11-2, was followed by an RBI groundout off the bat of SS Greg Lemon to give New Hampshire a 12-2 lead. Rookie catcher Albert Mojica cleared the bases with a three-run triple to add to the rout at 15-2.

New Jersey rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth inning, but it proved to be too little, too late as reliever Rob Riley escaped the jam.

Vicaro (0-1) took the loss, allowing nine runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and a walk in three innings. Asselin (1-0) earned the victory, tossing five innings and surrendering two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Riley hurled the final four innings for New Hampshire to earn his first save of the season.

The Jackals return home on Monday, June 1 to host Les Capitales de Quebec at 7:05 p.m when New Jersey right-hander Stuart Pomeranz, a former second round draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals, makes his first start of the season against Quebec righty Chris Allen. The Jackals home opener is also Mortgage Monday, where one lucky fan will win two months of mortgage or rent payments.

The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2009 season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.

Nashua, NH – The New Jersey Jackals split a doubleheader against the American Defenders of New Hampshire on Saturday at Historic Holman Stadium. The Defenders took game one by a 4-2 score before the Jackals put up ten runs for the second straight night in a 10-6 game two victory.

In game one, Defenders’ right-hander Isaac Burkett struck out nine batters and allowed two runs on five hits in six innings to earn the victory.

The Defenders struck Jackals starter Ted Serro, who took the loss, for two runs in the first inning on an RBI double by right fielder Angel Molina and an RBI fielders’ choice off the bat of designated hitter Jabe Bergeron. After the Jackals plated a run in the top of the third on an RBI single by shortstop Mike DeJesus, a solo home run by New Hampshire first baseman Clyde Williams in the bottom of the third made it a 3-1 game. Center fielder Edward Ovalle RBI single in the fourth extended New Hampshire’s lead to 4-1.

The Jackals plated a run in the sixth, but Juan Padilla pitched a scoreless seventh to notch the save.

In game two, New Jersey jumped out to a 9-2 lead led by a two-run home run by Myron Leslie in the top of the fourth inning. However, a grand slam by Defenders shortstop Chris Weakley in the bottom of the fourth pulled New Hampshire within three at 9-6. The grand slam was Weakley’s first professional hit. The Jackals tacked on the game’s final run in the top of the sixth.

Right-hander Seth Overbey picked up the win in relief, tossing a scoreless sixth after starter A.J. Wideman went four innings and allowed six runs – five earned – on seven hits while striking out two and walking one. Jackals closer Rusty Tucker pitched a scoreless seventh in a non-save situation. The loss went to Defenders’ starter Brett Palanski, who allowed seven runs – six earned – on eight hits over three innings.

The Jackals and Defenders wrap up their current four-game series on Sunday, May 31 at 6:35 p.m. when New Jersey sends right-hander Mike Vicaro to the hill against New Hampshire righty Nick Asselin.

The Jackals return home on Monday, June 1 to host Les Capitales de Quebec at 7:05 p.m. The Jackals home opener is also Mortgage Monday, where one lucky fan will win two months of mortgage or rent payments.

Nashua, NH – Jackals starter Isaac Pavlik hurled six shutout innings and right fielder Quinn Stewart lifted a three-run home run in the top of the third inning as the New Jersey Jackals (1-0) defeated the American Defenders of New Hampshire (0-1) 10-0 in Friday night’s 2009 season opener at Historic Holman Stadium in Nashua, NH.

With New Jersey already leading 1-0 after a second inning groundout by left fielder Ryan Rogowski, an RBI double by first baseman Juan Tejeda in the top of the third inning made it 2-0. Stewart’s blast followed by a Rogowski sacrifice fly extended the Jackals advantage to 6-0.

That score held until the eighth inning, when a pair of wild pitches by Defenders reliever Chad Bentz made it an 8-0 game. Then in the top of the ninth, a bases-loaded walk by Rogowski and an RBI single by second baseman Marcus Sanders capped the scoring at 10-0.

Pavlik (1-0) allowed three hits while striking out five batters without allowing a walk to earn the win. The loss went to New Hampshire starter Mark Romanczuk, who allowed six runs – five earned – on seven hits in four innings. Jackals relievers Dave Qualben and Giuseppe Granitto combined to hurl three scoreless frames.

Offensively, Stewart led the charge for New Jersey going 3-for-5 at the dish. For the Defenders, center fielder Edward Ovalle and third baseman Chris Kelly each contributed a double in the losing effort.

The Jackals and Defenders will play a doubleheader at 4 p.m. on Saturday before rounding out the four-game series on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. On Saturday, righty Ted Serro will take the ball for the Jackals in game one with southpaw A.J. Wideman heading to the hill in the nightcap. New Jersey returns home on June 1 to host Les Capitales de Quebec.
