Nashua, NH – The American Defenders of New Hampshire (16-18) scored in five different innings to take down the Sussex Skyhawks (15-19), 11-5, in front of 1,012 fans at Historic Holman Stadium on Friday night.

Down 4-1 heading into the bottom of the third, the Defenders responded with four runs, highlighted by a two-run single from Argenis Tavarez. Edward Ovalle’s fourth inning homer gave NH a 6-4 lead they would never relinquish, while Angel Molina’s three-run shot in the sixth provided some extra insurance. Third baseman Chris Kelly belted his league-leading ninth homerun well over the left-center field wall in the eighth inning to cap off his 4-for-5 night.

Sussex had jumped out to an early lead after a three-run third inning, including a two-run double by first baseman John Urick. The Skyhawks could manage just one more run in the seventh inning, a solo blast from centerfielder Luis Soto. Third baseman Jeremy Hunt picked up two hits in four at bats for Sussex.

New Hampshire starter Nick Asselin (3-3) earned the win to even his record, working six innings, allowing four runs (three earned), on seven hits, with one walk, and one strikeout. NH also received scoreless frames from relievers Adam Piechowski and Juan Padilla.

The Skyhawks sent lefty Roger Lincoln (2-2) to the mound, who suffered the loss, allowing six runs, on seven hits, with three walks, and seven strikeouts. Lincoln was relieved by Alex Smith, who was touched up for five runs over four innings.

The Defenders will take on the Sussex Skyhawks on the Fourth of July, starting at 2:05pm on Saturday at Historic Holman Stadium. The game will be followed by a concert featuring AFTERBURNER, with beer tents available and fireworks starting at dusk. Sunday’s contest will begin at 5:05pm as the first 1,000 fans will receive logo baseballs.

@ Quebec City, QC.

The game scheduled between New Jersey and Quebec was postponed due rain. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Thursday, June 11th beginning at 5:30 PM.

———————————————————————–

@ Worcester, MA. Time: 3:01 Attendance: 1,260

W: Anthony Sullivan (1-1) L: Matt Petrusek (0-2) S: None

HR: None

The Worcester Tornadoes found themselves down 3-1 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, but the team put together a string of four consecutive hits to tie the score at 3-3 and force extra innings. After three straight Worcester singles to lead off the ninth, DH Mike Leonard, who was 3-for-5 in the game, drove in the tying run with a RBI double. The game remained tied until the 11th, when Tornadoes 2B Jeff LaHair singled home C Alex Trezza to give Worcester a walk-off win. Tornadoes reliever Anthony Sullivan picked up his first win. He allowed one hit in a scoreless 11th.

———————————————————————–

HR: BR-Keith Brachold (3), Jud Thigpen (3) NH-Chris Kelly (3), Clyde Williams 2(5)

Williams was 3-for-6 with a pair of home runs, none bigger than his walk-off solo shot in the 14th inning, four hours and forty minutes after the game’s first pitch. In all, Williams drove in four in the game. Williams’ heroics overshadowed a great game by Brockton RF Jud Thigpen. Thigpen was 2-for-6 with a home run and five RBI. The game was an offensive showcase with the teams combining for 36 hits and five home runs. New Hampshire reliever Brett Palanski picked up his first win despite the offensive dominance thanks to 2/3 of a scoreless inning.

Worcester built a big lead then withstood a furious ninth inning rally to top The American Defenders of New Hampshire 9-8. The Tornadoes scored four runs in the third inning and added five more in the middle frames to hold a 9-1 lead over heading into the ninth. But New Hampshire scored five times off Worcester’s Jusef Frias, including a grand slam by 3B Chris Kelly, and was in position to do more damage when they loaded the bases again with just one out. A throwing error plated two runs but the tying run was cut down at home plate. Tornadoes closer Anthony Sullivan got a groundout from the next batter to end the game. DH Nick Salotti and LF Carlos Sosa combined for four hits and five RBI for Worcester. RF Heath Keel went 3-for-4 for the Tornadoes.

BROCKTON, MA – (June 2, 2009) – OF Palmer Karr singled off the chest of New Hampshire third baseman Chris Kelly and 1B Keith Brachold sprinted home to score the winning run for the Rox in the bottom of the ninth inning on Tuesday night. The 4-3 victory was the third win in-a-row for Brockton, and the Rox can sweep the Defenders on Wednesday night.

Despite leading for the first six innings, the Rox were forced to mount a comeback after New Hampshire took a 3-2 lead in the eighth inning on DH Clyde Williams’ RBI single. In the bottom of the eighth inning, SS Dominic Ramos tied the score at 3-3 on a two-out RBI single, scoring LF Napoleon Calzado from third base.

In the bottom of the ninth, Brachold started the inning with an infield single which was immediately followed by a bloop single from LF Jud Thigpen, advancing Brachold to third base. Karr then smashed a one-hop line drive off of Defenders’ third baseman Chris Kelly. The ball rolled into to foul territory and Brachold scored easily with the winning run.

The win could have come easier for the Rox who got a terrific start from RHP Wayne Lundgren. Lundgren tossed 6.1 innings in his second start of the year and yielded two runs on six hits. While Lundgren was at work, the Rox offense stranded ten base-runners over the first six innings, benefitting from six walks by New Hampshire starter LHP Luis Ramos. Lundgren departed with the scored tied at 2 runs apiece and runners at second and third with just one out.

LHP Brad Hertzler entered the game and struck out pinch hitter Rob Riley before inducing an inning-ending groundout off the bat of SS Greg Lemon.

RHP Matt Zachary relieved Hertzler for the ninth inning and worked a scoreless frame to earn his first win of the year. The Rox and Defenders conclude the series on Wednesday night at Campanelli Stadium at 7:05 PM. RHP John Kelly makes his second start of the year for Brockton against New Hampshire’s LHP Mark Romanczuk.

Nashua, NH – The American Defenders of New Hampshire (2-2) plated nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to defeat the New Jersey Jackals (2-2) 15-5 on Sunday evening at Historic Holman Stadium in the final game of the season-opening four-game series.

The Defenders jumped on Jackals’ starter Mike Vicaro immediately out of the gate, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning on a pair of RBI singles by right fielder Angel Molina and first baseman Clyde Williams, and a three-run home run by left fielder Jerod Edmondson. An RBI double by center fielder Edward Ovalle in the bottom of the second extended the New Hampshire lead to 6-0.

The Jackals broke through against New Hampshire righty Nick Asselin in the top of the fourth inning. With one out and Myron Leslie aboard after a leadoff double, right fielder Quinn Stewart ripped a double down the left field line to make it a 6-1 game. Two batter later, center fielder Zack Smithlin laced a run-scoring single up the middle to pull the Jackals within four.

But in the bottom of the fourth, the Defenders the Jackals starter from the game, scoring nine runs on six hits while sending 13 batters to the plate against Vicaro and reliever Giuseppe Granitto. A two-run double by second baseman Boomer Berry was followed by run-scoring doubles by Ovalle and third baseman Chris Kelly to extend the Defenders’ lead to 10-2. An infield single by designated hitter Argenis Tavarez, which made it 11-2, was followed by an RBI groundout off the bat of SS Greg Lemon to give New Hampshire a 12-2 lead. Rookie catcher Albert Mojica cleared the bases with a three-run triple to add to the rout at 15-2.

New Jersey rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth inning, but it proved to be too little, too late as reliever Rob Riley escaped the jam.

Vicaro (0-1) took the loss, allowing nine runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and a walk in three innings. Asselin (1-0) earned the victory, tossing five innings and surrendering two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Riley hurled the final four innings for New Hampshire to earn his first save of the season.

The Jackals return home on Monday, June 1 to host Les Capitales de Quebec at 7:05 p.m when New Jersey right-hander Stuart Pomeranz, a former second round draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals, makes his first start of the season against Quebec righty Chris Allen. The Jackals home opener is also Mortgage Monday, where one lucky fan will win two months of mortgage or rent payments.

The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2009 season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.
