Little Falls, NJ – A rain delay was the only thing that could slow down the New Jersey bats as the Jackals defeated the Brockton Rox 7-5 on Sunday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium. The victory helped the Jackals to a 3-1 series win over Brockton.

New Jersey left-hander Isaac Pavlik (1-1), who did not return to the mound after the one hour, 15 minute delay following the final out of the fifth inning, tossed five shutout frames in his first start of the season to earn the win. The New Jersey native scattered four hits, walked two, and struck out three. Pavlik had appeared in four games out of the Jackals bullpen this season after leading the team with 18 starts in 2009.

The Jackals collected a season-high seven extra-base hits as they built an early 7-0 lead against Brockton starter Logan Williamson. In the first inning, a two-out RBI double to left center by first baseman Jabe Bergeron was followed by a two-run single off the bat of left fielder Jordan Newton to give the Jackals a 3-0 advantage. The Jackals extended their lead to 6-0 in the third when designated hitter Jacob Butler launched a two-run home run to right center before shortstop Mike DeJesus added with a run-scoring double down the left field line.

After the Jackals plated a run in the bottom of the fifth on a Bergeron double and a Newton RBI single to make it 7-0, the skies opened up, forcing the tarp onto the field.

Once the teams returned to action, Brockton put up five runs against reliever Luis Fernandez in the top of the sixth to pull within two at 7-5. Fernandez retired the first two batters he faced before loading the bases on a walk by third baseman Phillip Cuadrado, a single by second baseman Scott Wearne, and a bunt single from shortstop Dominic Ramos. Rookie catcher Dan Coury laced his second double of the contest to cut the Brockton deficit to 7-2. Two batters later, right fielder Keith Brachold continued his hot hitting in the series when he tripled to center with the bases loaded before Fernandez escaped the jam by retiring first baseman Melvin Falu to preserve the two-run Jackals’ lead.

In the top of the ninth, Brockton used a Falu walk and a single by left fielder Mike Conroy to put the tying run on base with one out, but Jackals closer Romas Hicks induced a game-ending double play off the bat of Cuadrado to seal the win. Hicks has saved all five of New Jersey’s victories this season.

In the win, New Jersey’s Dan Griffin and Mike Pontius each chipped in a scoreless inning of relief. The loss went to Williamson (0-1), who surrendered seven runs on nine hits in five innings of work. Offensively, Newton went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs for the second straight contest to finish the series 8-for-16 with seven RBIs.

The Jackals enjoy their first day off this season on Monday before beginning a three-game series against the Pittsfield Colonials on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m at Yogi Berra Stadium. The game-one pitching matchup will feature a rematch of last Wednesday’s contest as New Jersey sends left-hander A.J. Wideman (1-1, 3.37 ERA) to the mound on his 25th birthday against Pittsfield southpaw and former Jackal Dave Qualben (0-1, 2.46 ERA). Pittsfield took two of three from New Jersey earlier this week in Massachusetts. Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.

Jackal Bites: Pavlik earned his 36th career win in a Jackals uniform, moving him within one of tying Aaron Myers for the second-most in team history… With runners on second and third in the second inning, a diving Argenis Reyes snagged a liner off the bat of Brockton center fielder Chris Valencia to end the inning and keep the Rox off the scoreboard… The Jackals did not commit an error in the four-game series against Brockton. They lead the league in fielding percentage and have committed a league-low seven errors in 11 contests… Brachold drove in seven runs in the series for Brockton… The Rox are now 0-6 when their opponent scores the game’s first run… Brockton’s six losses have been by a total of just eight runs while New Jersey’s five wins have come by seven runs.

The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2010 season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.
Brockton 9, New Jersey 7

Brockton 1B Melvin Falu powered the Rox offense to a 9-7 win over New Jersey, going 4-for-5 with a triple, two runs scored and a RBI. In all, five Brockton batters recorded multi-hit games, including 3B Phillip Cuadrado, who was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and a RBI. Rox starter Mike Wlodarczyk picked up his first win despite allowing six runs on 10 hits in six innings of work. Brockton reliever Josh Papelbon allowed a run in the ninth, but held on for his first save of the season.

Worcester 12, Sussex 8

Worcester scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning and it appeared as if they would cruise to a win over Sussex. The Skyhawks had other plans, however, and chipped away until they eventually tied the game, 8-8, with a three-run eighth inning. But the Tornadoes landed the dagger with four runs in the bottom of the frame and went on to the 12-8 win. Worcester 3B Chris Colabello was the star offensively, going 4-for-5 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and four RBI. Tornadoes reliever John Slusarz allowed one run over 1.1 innings, but held on to earn his first win.

Quebec 10, Pittsfield 7 (Bottom 9)

The game between Quebec and Pittsfield was still in progress with the Capitales leading the Colonials, 10-7, in the bottom of the ninth inning. For complete game information, visit www.canamleague.com.

Pittsfield, MA – Kevin Clark lifted a pair of home runs to lead the New Jersey Jackals to a 4-2 victory in game one before the Pittsfield Colonials rallied for a run in their final at-bat in the nightcap as the teams split a doubleheader on Wednesday evening at Wahconah Park.

Clark staked New Jersey to a 2-0 lead against former Jackal Dave Qualben when he homered to right to lead off the game before lifting a solo shot with one out in the third. Pittsfield plated a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by second baseman Danny Bomback, but that’s all the Colonials would muster against Jackals’ starter A.J. Wideman (1-1), who struck out five and allowed six hits in 5 2/3 innings to earn his first win of the season.

The Jackals tacked on two runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run single by second baseman Argenis Reyes following doubles by Clark and catcher Jordan Newton to take a 4-1 lead before turning the ball over to closer Romas Hicks in the bottom of the frame. Hicks surrendered three hits, including an RBI single off the bat of shortstop Matt Nandin, but the Jackals’ closer struck out three batters to notch his second save in as many chances this season.

Clark finished the contest 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Qualben (0-1) took the loss after yielding two runs on five hits with six strikeouts over five innings. Jackals’ reliever Mike Pontius bridged the gap from Wideman to Hicks by striking out the only batter he faced in the sixth.

In game two, Jackals starter Dan Griffin allowed just one run on two hits in 5 2/3 innings, but an RBI single by Pittsfield catcher Chris Torres in the bottom of the seventh inning carried the Colonials to a 2-1 win.

The Colonials plated the game’s first run in the second inning when right fielder Angel Molina led off with a double before scoring on a single to center by Baez. However, New Jersey evened the score at one in the fourth when Reyes, who led off with a single, scored on a two-out double by shortstop Mike DeJesus.

Neither starter factored in the decision in the nightcap as Pittsfield’s Chance Corgan surrendered one run in five innings. Colonials reliever Chris Rollins (1-0) retired all six batters he faced, three via strikeouts, to earn the win in relief. Isaac Pavlik (0-1) was on the hill in the seventh and took the loss.

The Jackals (2-5) return to Yogi Berra Stadium for Thursday night’s home opener, a 7:05 p.m. contest against the Brockton Rox. New Jersey will send right-hander Nick Asselin (0-1, 7.20 ERA) to the mound against Brockton righty Mike Smith (1-0, 3.38 ERA). Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.

Sussex 7, Brockton 5

The Sussex Skyhawks scored six big runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-1 lead and held off a Brockton rally to beat the Rox 7-5. Skyhawks DH Caleb Stewart went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI while 2B Chase Fontaine had a two-hit game with two runs scored and two driven in. Sussex starter Jusef Frias won his first game of the season as he allowed two earned runs on seven hits while fanning eight batters in six innings of work. DH Scott Wearne went 2-for-4 with three RBI for Brockton in defeat.

New Jersey 4, Pittsfield 2 (Game 1 – 7 innings)

Jackals CF Kevin Clark had a huge game at the plate to lead New Jersey past Pittsfield in game one of a doubleheader. Clark was 4-for-5 with a pair of solo home runs, two doubles and three runs scored to lead all hitters. Jackals starting pitcher A.J. Wideman took care of the rest, allowing one run on six hits while striking out five in 5.2 innings to record his first win of the season. New Jersey closer Romas Hicks allowed a run before striking out the side in the seventh inning to notch his second save.

Pittsfield 2, New Jersey 1 (Game 2 – 7 innings)

Pittsfield C Chris Torres singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to help the Colonials salvage a split of the doubleheader. Pittsfield RF Angel Molina drove in the teams only other run and finished the contest 2-for-3 with a double. Colonials reliever Chris Rollins fanned three in two shutout innings to earn his first win of the season. Pittsfield starter Chance Corgan pitched well, allowing one run on five hits in five innings of work, but did not factor in the decision.

Quebec 4, Worcester 3

A sacrifice fly off the bat of Quebec CF Goefrey Tomlinson in the sixth inning was the difference in the Capitales 4-3 win over Worcester. Quebec reliever Sean Gregory picked up the win after allowing an unearned run in two innings of work, while fellow reliever Derek McDaid nabbed the save thanks to a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Quebec 3B Patrick Deschenes led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a RBI. Capitales C Patrick D’Aoust doubled and scored a run and was also 2-for-4.

Augusta, N.J. – The Brockton Rox scored three runs in the first inning and never took the foot off the pedal as they cruised to a 9-2 victory over the Sussex Skyhawks on Monday afternoon at Skylands Park in Augusta, N.J.

The Rox (2-2) got on the board in the first inning when RF Keith Brachold tripled with one out and 1B Melvin Falu singled to bring him home. After Falu moved to second on a wild pitch, LF Mike Conroy doubled to score Falu, and then two batters later, C Chris Grossman hit a sacrifice fly to score the third run of the frame.

Brockton tacked on single runs in the third and fifth. Grossman connected on an RBI double in the third and 3B Phillip Cuadrado plated Brockton’s fifth run in the fifth with a single. Meanwhile, RHP Freddy Flores was cruising and finished the contest with a line of two runs on five hits over six innings of work, to pick up his first victory of the year.

The Rox added a four-spot in the sixth as CF Chris Valencia stroked a two-run triple. Conroy and 2B Derek Kinzler each added an RBI in the frame. Falu, Conroy, Cuadrado, SS Dominic Ramos and DH Scott Wearne all had multiple-hit games for Brockton. Conroy was the top performer, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Sussex (3-2) scored one run each in the fifth and sixth. The run in the fifth inning came home on a double-play ball, while 2B Chase Fontaine doubled home a man in the sixth. Skyhawks starter Tim Stringer pitched five innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits as he was dealt the defeat.

DH Caleb Stewart was the only Skyhawk to have two hits as they only managed seven hits for the contest. LF Kraig Binick, Fontaine, 1B Kris Sanchez, RF Kade Keowen and C Jon Gossard accounted for the other five base knocks.

Brockton’s bullpen was strong as well, RHP Buster Lussier pitched two full innings, allowing only two hits. RHP Josh Papelbon made his Rox debut, pitching a perfect ninth in a non-save situation.

The three-game series between the Rox and Skyhawks continues on Tuesday evening at 7:05 p.m. LHP Logan Williamson (NR) will make his debut for Brockton and will be opposed by LHP Jeff Icenogle (1-0, 0.00). Icenogle was tabbed Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week for his five innings of shutout work on Thursday against New Jersey.

The Skyhawks’ offense came alive again on Saturday afternoon at CenturyLink Field at Skylands Park as Sussex came back from a first-inning 3-0 deficit to defeat the New Jersey Jackals 9-5. The Skyhawks, now 2-1, have scored 22 runs in their first three games of the 2010 Can-Am League season.

RHP Mike McGuire started the game for the home team on his 24th birthday. He got off to a rocky start, surrendering a three-run homerun to DH Shawn Riggans of New Jersey in the first. Riggans, the Can-Am leader in RBI at game’s end with six, had another strong game at the plate, going 3 for 4 with those 3 RBI.

From there on, however, Sussex took over. McGuire settled down, and SS Joe Persichina hit a two-run homer in the second to draw the Skyhawks within one. By the bottom of the sixth, the home team was up 5-3. CF Carl Loadenthal poked a double down the left field line with the bases loaded in that half-inning for his first hit of the season, driving in two, and 1B Kris Sanchez followed up with a two-RBI single to make it 9-3 Sussex. The Jackals came back to score two runs off of RHP Kevin Gunter in the seventh and then had RHP Jared Yecker on the ropes in the ninth with the bases loaded and one out, but RHP Duaner Sanchez came in and retired the next two batters on four pitches to earn his second save of the series. Mike McGuire took home the win, and RHP Nick Asselin of New Jersey was tagged with the loss.

Sunday afternoon, the Skyhawks will look to earn their first series win of the season. New Jersey LHP Ryan Lobban and Sussex RHP Daniel Berlind are the probable starters. Senior citizens will receive a $2 discount off each ticket and can eat for free by presenting a coupon from the New Jersey Herald.

Quebec 7, Pittsfield 3

Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the eighth, Quebec 3B Patrick Deschenes hit a go-ahead grand slam after a hit by pitch and two walks loaded the bases. RF Sebastien Boucher followed two batters later with a two-run shot to put the game out of reach and launch the Capitales to an exciting 7-3 opening-night, come-from-behind win. After leadoff man Goefrey Tomlinson hit a solo home run as the Capitales’ first batter of the season, two Quebec errors led to Pittsfield’s tying run in the third. Colonials 1B Jerod Edmondson then hit a go-ahead solo home run in the fifth inning, and added another RBI in the seventh before the six-run Capitales outburst in the eighth. The Pittsfield bullpen surrendered six runs, while rookie Sean Gregory earned the win for Quebec in relief.

Sussex 4, New Jersey 3

Sussex 2B Chase Fontaine knocked in three runs on two doubles and the Skyhawks held New Jersey to three runs to collect their first victory in a 4-3 opening night win at home. Sussex starter Justin Dignelli gave up just two runs in 5.2 innings and the bullpen backed him up with 3.1 innings of one-run ball to hold off the Jackals’ offense. The Skyhawks scored a single unearned tally in the first on a Fontaine two-bagger, and plated three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. New Jersey scored two in the sixth and one in the eighth, but couldn’t find the final run they needed to tie the game. Veteran closer Duaner Sanchez earned his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

BROCKTON, MA – (July 12, 2009) – The Brockton Rox tied a franchise record with the team’s eighth consecutive win on Sunday night at Campanelli Stadium with a 7-6 win over the Quebec Capitales. RHP Jerry Dunn struck out DH Eddie Lantigua to end the game with the tying run at third base.

Twice Brockton erased a deficit, and did so without scoring an earned run in the entire game. Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning, the Rox scored three unearned runs to take a 3-2 lead. Capitales’ CF Goefrey Tomlinson dropped a fly ball off the bat of Brockton’s DH Palmer Karr to start the inning. Karr took second base on the error. LF Keith Brachold singled to plate Karr after a ground out. Then 2B Melvin Falu doubled into the right field corner to push Brachold to third base. Brachold scored on a ground out and Falu scored on a subsequent RBI double by C Chris Grossman.

Meanwhile, RHP Buster Lussier was called on in emergency relief after Rox starter LHP Bryan Morse left in the first inning with tendonitis in his forearm. Lussier retired the first four batters he faced, getting the last out in the first inning and working a 1-2-3 second inning. However, Quebec re-captured the lead with two runs in the third against Lussier who surrendered three total in his 4.1 innings of work. The third run Lussier allowed gave Quebec a 5-3 lead in the fifth inning. 3B Patrick Deschenes doubled to bring home 1B Pierre-Luc Laforest.

Quebec committed its second of three errors to open the sixth inning when SS Ivan Naccarata threw wildly to first on a ground ball by RF Jud Thigpen. The Rox capitalized by scoring four runs in the inning on three hits and another Capitales’ error. The final run of the inning scored on a wild play. With 3B Phillip Cuadrado at third and Grossman at first, SS Dominic Ramos singled to left field. Grossman went to third and Ramos found himself hung up in a run down between first and second. Quebec left field Tony Lewis threw to the cutoff man, Naccarata who turned and threw to second base, catching Ramos between first and second base. In the ensuing rundown, Grossman bolted for home and the attempt to throw him out skipped beyond Capitales’ catcher Patrick D’Aoust. Grossman scored and Ramos reached second base safely.

The Rox bullpen was terrific as RHP Matt Zachary earned the win, following Lussier’s 4.1 innings with two scoreless frames of his own. LHP Brad Hertzler extended his scoreless innings streak to 12 with a scoreless eighth and RHP Jerry Dunn picked up his seventh save of the year getting the final three outs.

The two teams complete the series on Monday at 6:05 PM at Campanelli Stadium. Quebec will send RHP Michel Simard (4-4, 3.36 ERA) out to match up against Rox LHP Craig Anderson (4-2, 2.58 ERA).

BROCKTON, MA – (June 26, 2009) – The Brockton Rox rallied from deficits of 6-1 and 7-2 in two different games on Thursday night, only to leave the game-tying run at second base in the final inning of each game. Brockton lost both halves of a double header with New Hampshire on Thursday, falling 6-5 in game one and 7-6 in game two.

The Rox trailed 6-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning (the final scheduled inning) of the first game. DH Palmer Karr hit a two-run home run, his first of two on the day to pull the score to 6-3. Two batters later, 3B Phillip Cuadrado came off the bench and delivered a two-run, pinch-hit home run to pull the Rox within one run. Two batters later, CF Chris Valencia singled and stole second base, and after a walk to 2B Melvin Falu, 1B Clyde Williams lined out to left field to end the game.

In the nightcap, New Hampshire broke out to an early lead again; scoring seven runs in the first three innings. Karr’s second home run of the day, a two-run homer in the first inning kept the Rox within striking distance. New Hampshire carried a 7-3 advantage into the sixth inning and the Rox started to chip away. Brockton scored twice in the inning on an RBI single by 1B Clyde Williams and a pinch-hit RBI single by C Chris Grossman.

New Hampshire held a two-run cushion and summoned RHP Juan Padilla for his second appearance of the day. Padilla had recorded the final outs of the first game to earn a save, and entered for the final inning of the second game. Valencia started the inning with a single, and after a line out, moved to second base on a walk by Karr. RF Jud Thigpen then doubled to left field, scoring Valencia, but Karr was thrown out after slipping around third base. Padilla then struck out LF Keith Brachold to end the game and earn his second save of the day.

Brockton and New Hampshire return to the field on Friday night at 7:05 PM. LHP Bryan Morse ( 0-0, 2.08 ERA) will face Defenders’ RHP Luis Valdez (0-1, 3.60 ERA).
