AUGUSTA, N.J. – Matt Weston’s RBI single gave the Sussex Skyhawks a one run lead in the bottom of the seventh, as the Skyhawks were able to hold off Worcester in a 4-3 victory at Skylands Park in their home opening on Monday night. James Douglas earned his first win of the season after pitching the top of the seventh. Matt Petrusek earned the save by pitching a scoreless ninth.
Skyhawk starter Mike Schellinger gave up two runs on three hits in the first inning, but the Skyhawks were able to rally in the sixth with three runs thanks in part to sacrifice flies by Maikel Jova and Jeremy Hunt. Ray Serrano added an RBI single to give the Skyhawks a 3-2 lead. However, Worcester tied it up in the top of the seventh with a double by Vinny Pinnell that scored Jeff LaHair.
Weston, who went 4-4 on the evening, lined a base hit scoring Ron Perodin. Perodin walked, moved up on a throwing error, and stole third.
Worcester and Sussex return to action at Skylands Park on Tuesday night at 7:05 for Game Two of the three game series.
