The Skyhawks took a big step in returning to championship form next season with the re-signing of 1B Matt Weston. Weston was a key cog in the Skyhawks Championship run, finishing the season with a .299 AVG; he was second in the league with 22 HR, and fifth in the league in slugging with a .556 SP. Weston finished with 197 total bases in 93 games with 106 hits, 19 doubles, 3 triples, 60 RBI’s and 60 runs scored.
The California native joined the Skyhawks after playing two seasons in the San Francisco Giants organization. Hawks manager, Hal Lanier said: “Matt was a major part of the offensive lineup, hitting over .300 up to the last day of the season, so getting a power guy like that back in the middle of the lineup is fantastic. Matt is also a very solid first baseman, with only 4 errors [last year], he is a real stop-gap at the position. He’s a good ballplayer and I’m very excited to have him returning this year.”
The Skyhawks also traded RHP Mike Cervera to Lincoln of the American Association to complete an earlier transaction.
The Skyhawks open up their 2009 home season on June 1st against the Worcester Tornadoes at 7:05 P.M. For more information check out www.sussexskyhawks.com.
